SAFFRON CULTIVATION IN INDIA

 

Kashmir in India has the diverse climatic conditions, fertile soil, sub-tropical, semi-temperate, temperate and arid climate zones offers a wide scope for cultivation and production of saffron. It is one of the most important produce and plays a significant role in employment generation to the rural people of Kashmir. The main cultivation areas of saffron are Kharewa, Chandhora, Pampore areas districts Pulwama, Budgam and Srinagar. District Pulwama, commonly known as saffron bowl of Kashmir, is dominant in saffron production followed by Budgam, Srinagar and Kistwar districts. Saffron (Crocus sativus) is one of the most important foreign exchange earners crop among the spices grown entirely in the state where about 49 per cent of its total produce is exported.

SAFFRON CULTIVATION IN IRAN

 

In Iran, Saffron is grown mainly in Khorasan and Fars province. It is also scarcely cultivated in Qom and Esfahan. The highest quality of Saffron is cultivated in Ghaenat (Qaenat) in Khorasan and Estahban in Fars Province. Saffron or Zafaran from both areas is same, but the colour is more intense from Saffron grown in Khorasan province and it releases more colour. The Saffron from Estahban has more smell and flavour. Saffron blossoms flourish in Autumn, November and Early December. The harvesting of saffron flowers is done only by hand and before the sunrise. People who intend to join saffron tour takes part in picking saffron flowers up, separates the stigma from the flowers and making some delicious Iranian foods with Saffron spice. Iran now accounts for 90% of the world production of Saffron/Zafaran!
